COMMUNITIES IN CROWLEY COUNTY, COLORADO
Crowley County is on the high plains of eastern Colorado and is comprised of rolling hills and beautiful plains. The landscape is a mixture of farming and ranching, with abundant wildlife, great fishing, beautiful lakes and four of the nicest communities you will find anywhere.
Ordway
by the Previous Mayor of Ordway, Nancy Moore
Welcome to Ordway! Ever wish you could live where you could walk or ride your
bike to the grocery store and the drug store; have your choice of places to eat;
find what you need at the local lumber yard; meet your neighbors at the post
office; watch a school activity? The list goes on and on. In Ordway, the living
is easy; the climate is the best in the state; the people are friendly. Churches
are welcoming. It is a great place to live, and it is an exceptional opportunity
for people who no longer have to live in the big cities. There are many
recreational, cultural and social experiences in town or nearby. Ordway is the
county seat and the location of the Crowley County High School, Ward Middle
School, the Crowley County Elementary School and an excellent new library. A new County Courthouse and
newly remodeled Justice Center are located here. There is also an excellent
nursing home in Ordway. We have wide streets lined by shade trees. The City
picks up our leaves and grass. Trash pickup is provided once each week. How
great is that?!
Crowley County Days takes place in shady Conestoga Park in the center of town always during the last week of July. If you want to enjoy a treat and a little bit of "good old Americana", come visit us then and enjoy the parade and roast beef feed on Saturday. This is rural Colorado at its best. It’s also a great opportunity to look the town over. We think you will find this is a very special place not only to visit but also to live! Retirees are discovering Ordway. If you don’t have to endure the pressures of the big cities, you should check us out.
Olney Springs
by the Mayor of Olney Springs, Deb DeVore
Olney Springs is located on Highway 96 and has a population of 300. As the
railroad came through the cattle ranch of Mr. Cronk a settlement sprung up and
soon it grew into a town. Mr.
Cronk
mapped out a section of the land and recorded it as Town of Olney Springs. In
1912 the town became incorporated and the first council was formed and adopting
ordinances.
Businesses in town include the Town Hall, Fire Department, library, café, cabinet shop, Post Office, a deli, grocery store and liquor store. Across from Town Hall is a Veteran's Memorial that is being built by volunteers and funded with donations. On the north side of town you will see the old School House which is now being used as a preschool. Behind the school is the Senior Citizen Center, and two blocks to the west you'll find the Olney Springs United Community Methodist Church.
For recreation there is a playground behind the Town Hall, ballpark north of town and two ponds west of town for fishing and camping. Every December we have a Chili Supper at the Senior Citizen Center with a Parade of Lights that goes all over town. After the parade desert and coffee is served back at the Senior Citizens Center and everyone is welcome. The Saturday before Christmas Santa arrives on the back of a 1946 Red Fire truck that drives up and down every street in town stopping on each block. He greets young and old with a sack of goodies and listens to their wish lists.
The majority of employment in our area is from farming, ranching and the two prisons that the town lies between. Others residents commute to Pueblo and other nearby locations. If you are traveling on Highway 96, stop in to say "Hi"...you'll be greeted with a friendly hometown atmosphere.
Crowley
by the Mayor of Crowley, Norene Aydelotte
Welcome to Crowley! Our quiet community of 200 friendly citizens is located just off highway 96 in the heart of Crowley County, and we are surrounded by farms and beautiful prairie.

Our Town takes pride in the restored old grade school building which is now on the State and National list of historic places. Now called The Crowley Heritage Center, it serves as a community center for the county and houses The Crowley County Heritage Museum. The building also houses the Crowley Town office and Town Hall, Senior Center and is quite busy. The Town has a picnic shelter, ball field, walking track and new play station in Brewer Park.
Our seniors group, Crowley Young at Heart, meets every Monday at 9:00 am for coffee. They host a community potluck the last Friday of each month at noon. They go on excursions and have fun. Crowley has drive through visitors each summer just to look at flower gardens. Come visit us in Crowley.
Sugar City
By Ruth Winegardner
My Home Town. What can I say about Sugar City, Colorado? It is a great place
to live and bring up children. With a population of around 250 it has a country
atmosphere and is calming to the nerves. You can sit on your porch at night and
hear the cows mooing and see thousands of stars in the clear sky and breathe the
fresh clean air.
We are located around fifty miles east of Pueblo and are twelve miles from Rocky Ford, the watermelon capital of the state, and twenty-two miles from La Junta where there is a hospital and several stores to go shopping like Wal-Mart, Safeway and a small Sears store plus numerous others. We also have two lakes within three miles of us for the fishermen and boaters. Schools are located five miles from us in Ordway, which also has a grocery store , lumber yard, car dealer, drug store, two banks and numerous small businesses.
We take a lot of pride in our small town and plan to make it the very best place to live we possibly can. So if you like the slow easy life why don’t you come by and visit us?
